In the second half of the baby’s first year babies move to change their
place in space. Through the baby’s self-initiated actions in cross-lateral
creeping and transitions to independent walking babies explore their
environment developing a spatial awareness of their expanding world.
New movement patterns stimulate the baby’s visual and haptic
explorations that lead to a variety of learning experiences, such as, quick
timing, increasing pressure, and smooth movement.
Creeping and walking on different surfaces, with varying degrees of slopes
to go downhill and uphill, challenges the baby’s coordination, balance, and
equilibrium responses. Viewing their surroundings from a different vantage
point, new walkers navigate a variety of environments, exploring larger
spaces.
